Things We Don't Talk About Regarding Mental Illness

1. When you smash things, you have to clean it up yourself.
Depending on what you're battling, sometimes, you'll smash things. You'll get angry and to avoid hurting someone, you'll close the door and smash something. You'll cry for a while and live in the moment of what you've done and what you're feeling, you might lie or sit in it or throw something else or you might stay quietly. But no one tells you about the quiet shame you feel after. You may feel embarrassed. You may feel all of it while you clean it up in calmer tears.

2. People forget your mental illnesses, even those close to you.
Even though you've been through it before with everyone you know, there are many instances they take things you say, feel, do personally. (Which is hard for them not to but also hard for you too) As much as everyone tries to say they're sensitive and empathetic/sympathetic to their loved ones with M/I sometimes they'll disregard it and take it as just: you.

3. People will leave because of it.
Some people will leave. Sometimes it exhausts them, sometimes it angers them. People do leave, they may tell you they wont, but it's not just in your head, mental illness does affect friends, partners and family.

4. You will disappoint yourself.
You've been doing so well, you thought you were good but out of nowhere it rears it's ugly head, and you'll feel exhausted and you might even blame it on yourself.

5. You'll break up and get back together, even if you sung a Tay Tay song.
It happens, and it's something partners of people with M/I should know and educate themselves on. We will break up with you and believe it's for the best for reasons of not wanting to bring your mood down, we might not feel supported, we feel better off alone. We don't do it to be a dick or to be manipulative, we do it because in our heads we genuinely believe it's the only option or it's for the best.
